Week 9-10

During week 9 I had two students come to my office hours. We discussed torque and angular acceleration, as that is what had been taught in class that week. The problems that they had were pretty advanced, so I could tell that these students were staying on top of their work and were most likely doing very well in the class. We had no trouble working through the problems together. Unfortunately, my office hours are held in a lab in the geology department so we often have several other students in the room finishing up the labs. However, the room is plenty big so this hasn't had a detrimental effect on helping the students. I had no office hours during week 10 because the university was closed for thanksgiving break.

Week 11

This week there were 2 students that came in with questions on the concept quiz.  There was a homework question that they had trouble with as well but the question ended up being excluded from the hw by Dr. Nero.

Week 12

Bhupinder Singh Physics 1 Professor Broccio Tuesdays 6-7:20pm This week we had no class, and the exam was the week prior, so no new material was taught. Since most students left for break early, I didn't get anyone to come into my office hours. Upcoming are the last two weeks of the semester, so I have a feeling a lot of students will show up. Hopefully, I can be of help to them.

Thanksgiving break means no office hours!!!!

Eat lots of turkeyyyyy :)

Week 12

Week of thanksgiving break-

There was no homework this week and no test so it wasn't much of a surprise when no one showed up for my Monday office hours from 1-3. I saw a lady bug though so that was pretty cool. We have off on Wednesday so I will not be holding my Wednesday office hours this week.

Week 11

Pretty low turn out for a test week.

The week of the other tests I had a large turn out with a variety of homework and test questions. This week I only had 3 people on Monday and one on Wednesday and they had homework questions and that was it. Hopefully everyone did well on the test.

Week 11

Dr. Broccio
Tuesday 6pm

This week I prepared for office hours by reviewing the homework assignment, watching the videos associated with this module, and going over some of the practice problems for the midterm. Nobody appeared for my first hour, but I had one student (who consistently comes the week of exams) come for my Thursday hour to review her equation sheet and look over some of the practice problems last-minute.

On Tuesday I had a think-aloud hour, and I believe I was able to provide the student with some help with her thought process and approach to problems involving torque and angular acceleration. Next week is Thanksgiving break, but I will still be holding my Monday office hour; I don't expect any attendance, but hopefully I will be surprised.

Week 12

I only had a Monday session of office hours this week, due to Thanksgiving break.  No students attended my office hours.  This is not surprising since there was an exam on Thursday, and because the due date for the homework was pushed back.

Week 10

I had one person come in and I helped him with his homework on angular momentum. The questions were simple as using a formula but he didn't know how to identify the problem. I explained to him to set up the problem before taking a look at the formulas and it helped him a lot.

Week 11

Bhupinder Singh Physics 1 Professor Broccio Tuesdays 6-7:20pm This week was the last set of exam, so I was preparing myself for students to come into my office hours. Furthermore, Professor Broccio assigned Think aloud tasks too, and a student came into my office hours, so I could administer it. The student was well aware of the fundamentals and knew how to solve the problems, which made me very happy. Hopefully all the students in my lecture did well on the exam, and we will return to lecture on december 1st.

Week 11

Tom Reynolds

MWF 9:00

This week 3 students came to my office hours.  One came with questions about the homework because she was falling behind in the class.  One came with a very simple question regarding the actual solution he had for his homework.  The last student, however, came because he couldn't get two of his answers to be the same even though they should look identical.  I looked and both were wrong so I tried to help him from the beginning.  It was challenging because the homework involved a double and triple integral and he has only taken calc 1. It took a lot of explaining to get him to a point where he could do the problem.  I let him do it right in front of me and I checked his work as he went to make sure he actually understood it.

Week 11

Melanie Roberts
Professor Broccio
Tuesday 6-7:20 pm

Week 11

No one came to my regularly scheduled office hours this week.  I had two students come to my think-aloud hour on Tuesday.  The first student had some difficulty with qualitative comparison of moments of inertia, especially as it related to finding angular acceleration.  He was able to reason his way through the first example fairly well, but struggled with comparing the inertia of solid cylinders when a force was applied.  The second student was able to reason through both problems qualitatively, although he was unable to recall the formulas for angular acceleration relating to force.  Talking to students in class was particularly enjoyable this Thursday, because I struggled with fluids and pressure when I took the course last fall.  The unit is/was good for me to review, as well.

Week 12

Recitation sessions this week continued to match the trends of previous weeks.  For the fourth week in a row, no students attended the Monday session, which has had low attendance for the entire semester.  Two students showed up to Friday's session with questions on angular momentum and gravitation, which were covered and most of the student's questions were answered.  The review sheets were briefly covered with the remaining time, focusing on the torque/equilibrium problems.  Overall, the sessions seem helpful for the students who attend even though attendance continues to be low.

Thursday, November 19, 2015

Week 9 and 10

I had one person came and I helped him with few questions about lenses and mirrors.
It seemed that he was more confused with the concepts rather than how to solve problems.
After I explained him about the concepts, he understood them and he was be able to do lenses and mirrors problems.

Week 10

Two kids showed up to office hours. Since the test is tomorrow, I went over some concepts that were being covered on the test. I also gave the students some practice problems of what could possibly be on the test

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Week of 11/16

I had 7 students come into office hours this week.  We reviewed rotational dynamics concepts and problems for the first 45 mins, then I answered any general questions students had for the material that is covered on this week's exam for the final 15 minutes.  I felt the students, for the most part, had a pretty good grasp of the rotational material once we went over in detail how angular variables can directly relate to linear variables.  Overall I felt this was one of the more productive weeks as a UTA I have had.  Hopefully the students do well on the exam tomorrow.

Week 11

Week 11 was another successful week, even though not many students came to the session. Two students came on Tuesday and one student came on Wednesday. We mostly discussed questions that the students had about their pre-lecture assignment, but we also used some extra time to go over the practice problems created by the other UTA's and myself. Most of the students' questions had to do with rotational equilibrium.

Week 10

On Tuesday, I had two students. They had issues with their homework questions, which I was able to help them with. They have a test coming up, so on Wednesday, a student came in with a practice exam, which I went through with him, and tried to give him problem solving solutions.

Week 10: Nov 9th-13th

I had one student come to my office hours this week. It was the same student that usually comes. We went over more torque things. Specifically, we were interested in how rotational energy. To cover this, we also had to go over moment of inertia and what it means physically.

week of 11/16

I had no students come in this week.

Noone came :(

Week 10

This week 2 kids came in during the course of my office hours.  Both had questions on hw and most of their questions related to individual questions they had regarding the upcoming test.  They wanted to have their questions answered last week before my office hours would be full this week because of the test.

Week 10

A total of 6 students showed up to office hours. Once again, a few students came in asking help on concepts, but others asked about homework problems. I was unable to attend a lecture after my office hours due to an illness, so I might have to read the book to catch up

Tuesday 6pm

This week I prepared for office hours by reviewing the homework assignment and watching the videos associated with this module. However, nobody appeared for any of my hours. Next week there will be an exam, so I'm hoping for a better turnout. We also are officially having think-aloud hours, so I'm eager to hold that again.

Week 10

I had a few more students than usual because of their exam in Friday, but most of the students only asked me questions on the homework. I also had trouble getting a room in the cathedral because of all the tours happening, but it shouldn't be a problem for week 10.

Week 9

This was the week before midterm 2. I didn't have an influx of students at office hours, but 2 people emailed me to have one on one physics help before their test. The grading session went as usual.

Week 10

Bhupinder Singh Physics 1 Professor Broccio Tuesdays 6-7:20pm This week I didn't have any students come to my office hours. I did have one student email me a question about the homework, but other than that, it was a dull week. Upcoming week, it's the third exam and we have think aloud tasks assigned, so hopefully I get some students who are looking for a helping hand. Generally, everything is going pretty well because the averages have been high. Other than that, not much is different from the previous week.

Week 10

Prof. Hong MWF 9:00

This week there was an exam on Friday so I just helped people review. One person came both in the morning and the afternoon and two more came in the afternoon.  I helped answer last minute questions that they had, explained the solutions to some of the homeworks they were still confused about and gave them some questions to test their knowledge of concepts for the test.

Week 10

This week another UTA covered my office hours, because I covered his office hours last week.

Tuesday 6pm

No one came to my office hours this week.  I am hopeful that some will attend next week, due to the exam.  In any case, it is rewarding to help students in class during group work assignments.  Students seem to be struggling with this unit more so than the previous ones.  The think-aloud task next week should help students review the material.

Week 10

Qihang Ou
M 1-2/W3-4
Dr. Salman

These week, no one came in my classroom. Hope next week there will be some students coming.

Week 11

This was a slow week of UTA sessions.  The Monday session again had no students and Friday's session had one attendee who has come to all of the Friday sessions.  We covered questions relating to rockets and to the change in kinetic energy that he had and did not have time to go over the problems prepared for this week.  Hopefully next week will have higher attendance, but given that it is the week before Thanksgiving, attendance will likely be low once more.

Week 10

A slower week this week.

I think that due to the discontinued extra credit my numbers have started to drop. On Monday I only had two students come in. They just worked together on homework problems and asked 1-2 quick questions of the course of ~1.5 hours. On Wednesday I had one student come in in the last ~15 minutes to ask for an explanation of what was going on in one of the homework problems.

Maybe next week there will be a higher volume of students due to the test.

Week of 11/9

I had 8 students come to my office hours this week, which is the most I've had in a non-test week.  We went over rotational kinematics, as the students seemed to struggle with it a lot.  All together, they seemed more confused by this topic than anything yet this year.  Hopefully I was able to clear up some conceptual understanding issues they had for their test next week.

Week of 11/9

No students came to office hours this week and my regular attendee is out for oral surgery. Before next test I imagine students will come.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Week 7-8

I didn't have anyone come to office hours these weeks. Starting to get lonely sitting in the room by myself for 3 hours. However, I do feel like I really get to help students during class. The course has a great setup where most of the class time is spent doing practice problems that apply to the concepts that are being taught. While the students are working on a problem, the UTAs get to walk around and help anyone that has a question. The past two weeks the class has been learning about circular motion and momentum. It has been rewarding getting to help the students grasp these concepts.

A student came in and expected me to teach him all of the material that he missed in lecture. I did my best with the time that we had. I did not really enjoy being used as a replacement professor.

Week 9

I had four students came in to my office hours regarding momentum HW questions.
I tried to explain those questions by explaining the concepts first.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Week 9

Dr. Broccio
Tuesday 6pm

This week I prepared for office hours by reviewing the homework assignment. I had one student show up for my second hour of the week. She needed help mostly with solving systems of equations algebraically but also combining multiple concepts to solve problems (notably conservation of total mechanical energy and conservation of momentum).

The group problems in class are going very well. Challenging the students' thoughts and getting them to apply different aspects of the conceptual material is becoming more and more of a strong suit of mine. I also assisted in my first demonstration in class last week, one regarding angular momentum.

Week 9

Bhupinder Singh Physics 1 Professor Broccio Tuesdays 6-7:20pm This week I had one person come to my office hours, and she just needed help with a homework assignment. Other than that, i didn't get any other students that needed help. However, in lecture, I actually gave a student the wrong formula, which I feel terrible about because then their whole understand of the problem was gone out the window. I'm going to prepare extra hard for this week, so i don't make that mistake again.

Week 9

During my Tuesday office hours, there were no students. One student showed up for my Wednesday office hours. However, she could only stay for about half an hour, and she had 4 questions. Seeing that I couldn't cover all the questions in that time, I emailed her some strategies for solving the questions we didn't get to. She said that it helped, and she could solve the problems.

Week 9

Tom Reynolds
Physics 175

This week three students came to my office hours.  The homework involved setting up and evaluating an integral. We talked about how to set it and where to define the limits.  Then there was a question involving some of the online homework so I reiterated some of the things discussed in the lecture to help him answer it.

Week 10

No one showed up to my peer-led sessions this week. I suspect that it was because there was an exam last week, so everyone wanted to take a break (very reasonable).

Week 9

I had 4 students show up on Tuesday and 1 student on Wednesday this week. We discussed rotational equilibrium and went over the extra problems that I brought to the session. Both sessions seemed very productive, especially the one on Tuesday because the students had common homework problems.

Week 9

I had 4 students attend office hours this week. All of them were looking for assistance on the homework. However, most students understand the material well, which will give them the conceptual base necessary to learn about angular momentum and torques.

Week 10

This week I had the same student attend again. We reviewed torque as she had trouble with it last week, but she seemed much more confident with it this week. Then we went over angular acceleration and the equations related to it. We finished up in maybe half an hour, before she left. She seemed to understand the material well this week.

Week 9

I had the same student attend my session as last week. I went over problems related to torque and center of mass. She was familiar with center of mass, but struggled with torque a little bit. I hope I clarified any issues that she had with torque.

Week 9: November 2-6

Noah Marks
Dr. Broccio
PHYS 0110: Tuesdays at 6

I had one student come to my office hour this week. We talked about torque. I think there was a problem in understanding that the force has to be perpendicular to the radius of the system. So, when there is a force that isn't perpendicular, you need to take a component of that force.

The lecture went well. I think students are understanding how similar rotational kinematics are to regular kinematics.

Week 9

No one came to my office hours this week.  I prepared for office hours by looking over the information in the book for rotational kinematics, momentum, and moment of inertia.  I also looked over the homework due this weekend.  I spent my time in office hours making sure I understood the information and made a list of relevant equations in preparation for class next Tuesday.

Week of 11/2

This was a pretty low-traffic week, presumably because they just had a test.  We went over work and momentum, and solved a few applications of the principle of conservation momentum.  A couple of  students approached me after lecture Thursday, and told me they were interested in coming to the review sessions.  Hopefully I will see them there next week.

Week 9

A slower week this week.

I think I am having less people due to the discontinued extra credit opportunity. On Monday I only had one student who just came in and worked on homework. On Wednesday I had an above average number of people come, but it seemed they all only came because there was one particularly hard homework problem that the professor wound up not counting anyway. We spent a long time trying to figure out the problem and eventually figured out a way to solve it. Hopefully everyone left feeling like they got what they were looking for.

Week 10

This week followed the trend of previous weeks: no students on Monday and a few students on Friday.  Monday's session is likely not a good time for many students given the low attendance seen over the semester.  Friday's session had four students, one new and three returning from previous sessions.  We started the session with a rocket problem that I could not answer and will review over the weekend, and then finished the session with the prepared problem sets on torque and equilibrium.  Besides the lack of attendees on Monday and not being able to answer the question on Friday, it was a good week of peer-led study sessions.

Week 10

This week I had pretty average attendance at office hours. Only 1 person came in on Monday, 3 came in on Tuesday, and 20-25 students came in on Wednesday. All of these students came in with questions about the homework, with question number 10 being by far the most difficult problem for the students. I went over this problem in detail with a student on Monday, and went over it again on Wednesday. There were some questions on other homework problems as well, but some of the students were able to help each other with their questions.

Week 9

Last week I had a higher than usual attendance at office hours. A lot of people came in on Monday and Wednesday with questions about the homework. I had about 15 students on Monday and approximately 20-25 students on Wednesday. On Tuesday I had my usual few students who come in mainly to work on their homework and just ask me questions when they get stuck.

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

Week 8

There was a test the week prior so attendance died down with only about 5 kids coming in.  However, they asked a lot of questions pertaining to hw and concepts that dealt with rotation and torque.

Week 7

This was from 2 weeks ago.  There were 10 kids that came in during my office hours.  Since this was a test week, all of the questions pertained to concepts and there was little hw answered.  A review session with practice problems was also done.

Week of 11/2

No students came to office hours today, probably because they just had a test.

Week 8

Dr. Broccio
Tuesday 6pm

This week I prepared for office hours by reviewing the test material and going over old homework assignments and practice problems. I had two students show up for my first hour, and one returned for the second one for some last-minute advice. I mainly helped them with their problem-solving approach, emphasizing drawing pictures before writing equations and leaving equations as variables as long as possible.

The group problems in class are going well. I am getting better at challenging students' initial assumptions and getting them to combine different concepts to solve multi-step problems. We will be having think-aloud hours the week of 11/9, so I'm getting excited for that.

Week 8

This week I had an about average turn out.

It seems that some weeks the students think that the homework is overall harder than other weeks. For example this week I had 5 people Monday and 7 people Wednesday all with questions pertaining to homework. In the past I've gotten weeks where no one had homework questions (typically the week of tests.)

Hopefully next week I get a similar number of people to show up

PHYS 0110
Dr. Broccio: Tuesdays at 6 pm

I had two students come to my office hours this week in anticipation for the test that was on Thursday. We went through some problems they had from previous homeworks. A large focus was on work energy theory. Specifically, we spent time on the fact that in the equation W=Fd, the force and the distance are "parallel" to one another. So if a force is some angle off of the horizontal, and you're looking for the work done by it in the horizontal, you need to break the force up into components. I hope the test went well!

Once again, no students attended my office hours.  Students took an exam on Thursday, October 29th.  I had prepared for my office hours by reviewing my old equation sheets, looking at the types of problems that I expected would be on the exam, and selecting several review problems.  There was no homework due for this week.  In class, many students struggled to apply conservation of momentum and energy to the group activity questions.  I hope that these students reviewed these concepts with a TA or Doctor Broccio if they needed help.

Week 8

I had one person come to my Monday office hours. They had mainly conceptual questions and I was able to help them.

Week 8

This week about 8 students came to my office hours. Many of them had questions about the same homework problem, and many of them came because it was the last date to get the extra credit. However, I have some return students that I hope will continue to come to my office hours, even though there is no more extra credit being offered.

Week 8

Bhupinder Singh Physics 1 Professor Broccio Tuesdays 6-7:20pm This week was the exam week, so I prepared myself for some questions. However, only person came to my office hours, and he just needed some clearing up on work and energy. I couldn't go to lecture this week because I was really under the weather. But I was eager to help students prior to the lecture because all my office hour times are on Monday and Tuesday Morning. Hopefully, as we are approaching to the third exam, I can help a lot more students.

Week 8

This week the homework was fairly simple so there was not a lot for me to do.  One student came with the homework completed just asking me to check it.  Although she was asking questions she seemed to answer them herself and I was just affirming her thoughts.  On Friday one student came with questions about an extra credit assignment.  I couldn't answer his questions about how it will be graded because I haven't been told but I was able to help him develop some of his thoughts on how to solve the issue presented in the extra credit.

Week 7

This week two students came to my office hours.  One came before starting the homework and asked for tips on how to begin.  We talked generally about how to go about solving it.  Another came asking specifically about the latter part of the homework.  It pertained to a particle moving through electric and magnetic fields.  He was having trouble relating the kinematics with the electrostatics but we talked about it and he was able to finish the homework.
