week 7

This week only one student showed up in my office hours. She asked me four homework questions. There was one that I didn't know how to solve. So I asked the professor and emailed the solution to her. It is a really complex question and I hope my email could be helpful for her.

Week 6

So this week proved to be interesting.

My first Monday TA session had about five people crowded in an alcove for the same problem that was part of the written work. Unfortunately, I too had trouble solving this one, as it used a concept that is not in the textbook and wasn't covered last semester. I managed to explain the general basis of what it asked, but only had a chance to work through it with one of the students that stayed longer than the others.

I could not help but arrive a few minutes late on Thursday's session (as I had more laptop trouble that required another call and shipment to Lenovo), but I managed to post an announcement about an hour in advance and stayed an extra fifteen minutes to make-up the time. One student seemed to have trouble solving the magnetic force equation using vector notation. Once I realized that he simply wasn't familiar with cross-products, we quickly went over an example and he was off.

Saturday has dried up completely. I guess students don't find waking up before noon worth it.

Week 7

This week I only had two students show up, they are both students who come quite frequently. I am surprised because the material that the professor is starting to cover was always the most challenging for me in the past so I would have thought that other students would feel the same and the number of visits would increase.

Week 6

No one has been coming to my Monday office hours, so I have decided to move them to Fridays. Hopefully this will encourage more students to come!

Week 6

Week six proceeded as normal.  I had the basically same groups of regulars and semi-regulars attend my office hours.  I had a large group on Monday due to a particularly confusing homework question.

Week 6

Last week I had 11 students come attend my office hours. Most of them had questions on homework, which I helped them work through. We also spent quite a bit of time talking about concepts that appeared on their take home quizzes. I tried to spend some time explaining topics that I thought might be difficult and would appear on their upcoming exam this week.

I mostly did work on the board, and if a new student walked in I would briefly explain to them what we were doing and what we had already covered as a group. Usually, students walked in and started working on homework themselves first, and came to me with any questions that came up. I think this was a generally effective strategy, since usually the students had specific questions rather than general questions that should be addressed to the entire group.

Week 6

Again, no one came to office hours, but I did help more people outside of them. A lot of people felt overwhelmed by the practice test and were unsure on how to prepare. They kept saying that the webassign problems were nothing like the actual test problems, which made it difficult to study for. However, they felt that they understood the material.

5th Week

Week 5 was another test week, so I expected to have a few people come in with practice exam questions.  On Monday I had 2 come in, one with the practice exam, and the other with homework, so I worked with both of them in turn.  Later in the week I got an email from a student wanting to attend my Thursday hours to go over some last minute questions before the test, but he never came.  Nobody besides the 2 on Monday came.

Week 6

Today I finished up my office hours for the week.

On Tuesday (3-5 PM), two students showed up at 3. They had a few conceptual question regarding the difference between momentum and how it relates to forces. After clearing up their misconceptions in a discussion, they completed a few problems without much difficulty. The two students left a little over 30 minutes into my office hours. Nobody else came for the remaining hour and a half.

On Wednesday (3-4 PM), nobody showed up to my office hours. It is pretty clear that most students come to earn extra credit for the class because every student I have seen has come exactly two times (which is what is required for extra credit).

Professor Dytman covered RC circuits in class. In my office hours, the students asked about the equations for the charging and discharging of capacitors in an RC circuit, which of course involves differential equations. The students were all taking Calculus 2, so I did not want to solve the formula for a charging capacitor which is a first order linear differential equation. However they asked me to derive the formula for a discharging capacitor which is a separable differential equation and thus easier to explain to students who are not taking differential equations. We are now moving into magnetism.

Week 6

This week I helped eight people.

There was a test this week, so the attendance of my office hours was significantly higher than any other week. I had five people come on Tuesday and two people on Wednesday. They wanted to go over the practice test, which really tested my knowledge of the material. In most weeks, I would be able to get by by going over the answers to the homeworks before my office hours. With the practice test, I was going in blind.

All in all, I was able to help out the students who came to my office hours. I was able to solve all of the problems that they had. I also learned that it is ok to ask the students what they would do when I am not sure what to the next step should be. It helps them out, and makes things a little easier on me. All in all, it was a good week.

Week 7

I had one student come this week to go over concepts before her quiz in recitation. She comes almost every week to review. It is nice to see students come back each week because I feel like I am being helpful.

Week 7

I had one student came and stayed for two hours.
It was pretty difficult to answer questions for two hours but I got to interact with a student and it was fun.

Week 6

Week 6 was the week of the second exam. On tuesday, I had the most people I have had (4). I simply went over the practice exam and a few homework questions. The students seemed more prepared after office hours than before. On thursday I had one student show up (after the exam), and she was interested in going over a few homework questions. We moved onto momentum now and I expect more students to start showing up.

week 6

No students came to my office hours this week. And it seems difficult for my professor to find a time to hold a meeting with us three UTAs because we have different available times. I hope to see more students next week.

Friday, February 20, 2015

Week 6

This week I only had two students. I was somewhat surprised because I would have thought that students would come in with questions from their exam the previous Friday. Instead, both students had questions regarding the weekly homework assignment.

Nationality rooms

Lately, tourists have really been bothering me in the Nationality Rooms. I understand when I don't have any students that a few people might come in and look around, but when I am trying to go over a problem on the board with students, it's very frustrating to be interrupted by chatting tourists. I just can't believe that people could be so impolite! Anyone have any tips to keep these distractions down?

Week 6

I only had 1 student at my office hours this week. I was not surprised because they had an exam on Friday and my hours are on Tuesday.  Hopefully there will be more students next week.

Week 5

Last Friday during my office hours I had 12 students attend office hours, the most I've had so far. Since the students usually came in their own small groups, I answered their questions to the whole group. The first group of 4-5 students had many conceptual questions from their past exam. After I answered their questions they did homework and asked me for any potential problems they might have been having while I helped a some new students that had come in with homework questions they had. There was a continuous flow of students and questions throughout the night so I was on my feet most of the time. The last student came in at 8:40pm and asked me to go through the multiple choice questions from the past exam with him.

Week 5

For this week I had 16 students. I consider that a pretty good turnout. I'm feeling a lot more comfortable about the way that I'm doing things. For this specific session, before my 3 hours started I wrote all of the relevant equations on the board. At the start, I fielded any conceptual or lecture material related questions. I got about 4-5 of those. Afterwards, I went over the times that each of the equations would be applied. Following this, I sat at my desk and let the students work on their homework and come up and ask me if they had any questions.

The advantage of this style is that I can address any broad questions at the start, but towards the main chunk of the session I can interface with the students 1-on-1. This helps with the shy students and also helps me get to know the students better. Things are more relaxed and the time still flies.

Week 5

A little late, but not much has really happened. Nobody else has been showing up to office hours really. We had a meeting with the professor about what he could do and he said that he would give us the answer keys to his practice exams for his upcoming test. Hopefully this encourages more students to come and seek help.

Week 6

I was disappointed that no one came to my office hours.
It was little discouraging.
However, since there is an exam a day after my office hours, I expect many students to show up on my office hours, hopefully.

Week 5

This week I didn't have any students come to my office hours besides the two people touring the nationality rooms. This was a a little discouraging, but it may be that they are not feeling too stressed about physics yet since they still have a few weeks before their next exam. The other UTAs in the class and I talked to the professor and he said he will give us the answers to the practice tests. Hopefully this will attract more students to office hours where we can help them work through practice test answers.

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Week 5

Today I finished up my office hours for the week. I expected more students to show because of the test on Thursday. However only 2 students showed up on Tuesday and on Wednesday one of the students from Tuesday came again.
On Tuesday (3-5PM), the students wanted to go over the practice exam that was posted on CourseWeb. Since both students had questions about the same problems, I was able to use the blackboard and explain the problems to them both at the same time. One student left an hour into my office hours. The other student stayed the entire time and we were able to go over the practice exam in greater detail.
On Wednesday (3-4PM), the same student that stayed for the entire two hours on Tuesday came again. This time she had questions about the homework for Chapter 8. I was able to clear up her misconceptions on the homework and prepare her the best I could for the exam on Thursday.

There has been a decline in student attendance, which is to be expected after an exam. There have been instances, however, when the students pose questions pertaining to the homework that they feel they have solved correctly. When I try to work it out, I get the same result that they do. I will definitely talk to Professor Dytman about this. All in all, some new students have come out, but ultimately it is not that taxing.

Weeks 4 and 5

Week 4 proceeded as usual. I had the usual people come to my office hours.
During week 5 I held a exam review session that was attended by about a dozen students, including some new faces.  The rest of week 5 saw lower attendance rates than usual due to a lack of written homework assignment that week.

Week 5

This week I had frequent flyers come, as well as a student who came my first week of office hours. We went over the previous exam and homework questions. They seem to understand everything, because I get them to work through the problem with me.
So it's been a while. I haven't had a laptop for the past two weeks, and failed to find the blog site without an instant link, so I'll try to make this count for two posts.

I had the same student come to my Saturday office hours and we spent the time working on basic concepts involving electric potential and capacitance. I spent about thirty minutes trying to explain how to use given capacitance and overall voltage of a complex circuit to find the charge and voltage difference across each capacitor, only to realize that he hadn't fully grasped how charge and voltage 'react?' differently between parallel and series. After taking less than three minutes to relay this, he solved the homework problem with no problems. *cough*.

It was a bit strange walking into lecture on Thursday. I knew in advance that I would be moderating the test session, but I still felt like the bumblebee in the bat cave. Alex and I were allowed to look over (but not solve of course) a copy of the test. The multiple choice differed slightly from what I had seen on last semesters final, but the dimensional analysis and relation to the homework was fair.

That weekends office hours were somewhat undignified. I had no trouble explaining the multiple choice, but the first open ended question required a look-back into the textbook and I still don't fully understand the second.

Based on the one student attendance rate for the past few weeks, Dr. Hong and I have decided to spread my office hours throughout the week. I'll need to find another study location, as Benedum library will not be suitable during the week.

Personal Note: I am so glad to finally have my laptop back.

Week 5

This week i helped 2 people

This was a pretty quiet week for me. I only had two kids come to my office hours--one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. It was pretty cool because I got to help them one on one. I find this to be much easier than when there is a large number of students who need help. One on one I can focus more on what each student individually needed rather than going over larger topics.

For instance, I have been working with the student who came on Tuesday about twice a week for the last two weeks. Because of this, I know the way he likes to work and the way he solves problems. This is pretty useful because I also know where he struggles and how I can help him best. He has shown great improvement since he started coming to my office hours, and it has been a rewarding experience seeing the growth.

The student who came on Thursday was a new student to me, and it was a little more tricky. I had to figure out how he worked and how he liked to solve problems. After a few minutes, though, I picked up on his habits and was able to help him effectively.

Week 5

The only problems people seemed to have had were on free body diagrams and how to apply them to the problems. Some kids were confused on their trig, but that was easy to rectify. They seemed happy with the test results, which had a pretty good average.

week 5

I helped two students this week. They all asked for my advise on preparation for the midterm. One of them also asked me a question on the physics lab sheet, which I hadn't expected at all. I didn't give her good suggestions to answer this question because I was not sure about it. I should prepare myself better next time.

Week 5

This week the students had an exam on Friday. Because of this, the students that came to office hours were asking mostly questions regarding problems from class and concepts, as opposed to the usual homework questions. This week I saw seven students, two on Monday, four on Wednesday, and one on Friday. I was surprised that more students did not come on Friday because my office hours were two hours before the exam so I expected a lot of last minute questions. It has been very enlightening to see the progression of some of the students who may now still ask questions but are much more able to participate in determining the solution.

Saturday, February 14, 2015

Week 5

I had two students at office hours this week. They each had specific questions that we worked through together. The questions were mostly dealing with forces and work. The class had an exam on Friday, so I was a little surprised more people were not at my office hours.

Circuits

This week began all of the circuit problems for the class, which is my favorite type of problem, so I was excited to get a few questions about them in office hours this week!

I also got some feedback about the exam now that students got their scores back, and it seems that the most common complaint was that they felt rushed for time.

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Week 4

This time around I still had a good number of people show up (12 students). Instead of standing up the whole time and answering questions or going over derivations the whole time, I took a more laid back approach. For the first half hour or so I went over general questions that people wanted to ask, but, in the absence of further questions, I told the students that they could work on homework or other material and if they had any questions they could come up and ask me. So for the rest of the session I sat at the desk at the front and this was actually a very effective strategy. Many of the kids who haven't spoken in my sessions came up readily for help. From now on I think I am going to go with this technique because I think it makes the students more comfortable and I can still be helpful.

4th Week of Office Hours

This week one student showed up.  We went over many force problems from the book.  He wanted to make sure he covered all the possible types of force problems he could because he didn't know what kind might be on the test, so we walked through quite a few.  During my other times, nobody else came.

Week 4

This week had students show up to my office hours on both Tuesday (3-5 PM) and Wednesday (3-4 PM). On Tuesday, two students that had come to my previous office hours came to ask questions on the homework. I helped each students with about 3 questions each by pointing out some of their misconceptions regarding each problem.
On Wednesday, one student came to see me. Instead of asking questions on the homework or other problems in the textbook, the student asked about concepts. This was a change of pace for me because I usually help students with problems and explain concepts along the way. However this student wasn't focusing on one problem. This student also came to one of my previous office hours.
It seems students are now taking advantage of the extra credit opportunity to visit the UTAs twice, especially after the results of the first exam were revealed.

Ryan Tan Week 4

Ryan Tan
Physics 0175
Dytman TH 1100-1245

The students have a test coming up this Thursday. As a result I am focused on answering their questions regarding the homework and any other concepts that they may be struggling with. It seems as if students have trouble grasping the concept of using Gauss's Law to find the electric field in between a system of spherical shell conductors. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be a looming topic that students struggle with.

Weeks 3 & 4

Unfortunately, I was out of town for the first two and a half weeks of the course so when I returned I did not quite know what to expect. I had two students my first week, both asking questions about the homework assignment. I did not have access to WebAssign at the time but the students and I were able to figure out the solutions. It seemed to me that they were able to solve the problem on their own with just a little push in the right direction.

The second week I had four students all during the same session. It was really nice having the group and I think it we managed our time as well as possible. Each student took turns asking their question and everyone participated in helping the others with their solutions. I am beginning to see repeat students which I think is great that they have a time that works with their schedule to seek help. Since my first session I have obtained access to WebAssign and I have found that it is helpful for me to do the assignments prior to my office hours because it is more time efficient when students ask questions if I do not have to solve the problem from scratch each time.

Week 4 Summary

Post by Daniel Sokolowski, 02/09/2015

Nobody came to my office hours last week (week 4, 02/03/2015-02/05/2015).

Week 4

I had 3 students come to office hours last Friday, all at different times. The first student came at the very start of office hours, and had one question about homework and a conceptual question. The next student had a few conceptual questions about electric potential and we discussed a few concepts from their take-home quiz that she was having some trouble with. The last student came around 7:45pm and stayed until about 10pm. She completed the rest of her homework with me, and actively asked questions about concepts used in the homework that she didn't understand or general methods to approach problems. She also had a question about a statement Dr. Frolov made in class, and we were able to go through a proof of that statement together. I feel I was able to help her understand the fundamentals of circuits, which was very rewarding. I hope to continue to have interactive students at my office hours.

Week 4

This week was slow at the start, however in my second office hours there were three attendees. They had conceptual questions of in class demonstrations as well as homework questions. I worked through the questions with them on the chalk board, utilizing their input to go through the problems. It was very involved and I enjoyed it. They came out saying that they finally understand the material.
Hearing that is very rewarding.

Week 4

I helped a few people this week after the test. One pair of kids responded that they really felt they knew the material, but made stupid mistakes like mixing up distance and displacement. From my experiences, most of the students understand the material very well and need to spend some of their focus on test-taking skills, reading directions and checking over their answers.

Week 4

I only helped one student this week. She had some questions about friction force in the homework,so we worked on them together. There was one problem that I was not very sure about. I felt a little nervous. But then we discussed it together and figured it out. I hope to see more students next week because the first exam is coming.

Week 3

This week was much busier than the two previous weeks. In my first two weeks of being a UTA, I only had one student come per week. This week however, I had three new students come to my Tuesday office hours and two students (one new and one returning) come to my Wednesday office hours.
On Tuesday, I was not expecting many students to come because of my past attendance. But there were three students there that asked for help. I think this is easily explained by the test that they just received their grades on. Perhaps more students are now taking advantage of the extra credit opportunity to come see me. In the past, I had only worked with one student at a time. Therefore in order to handle three at  a time, I had to change my strategy. Instead of working through a problem with a student step by step, I had to pick out problems for each student to do (that go along with what they were struggling with) and balance my time equally among each student. The first 15 minutes or so were a little stressful but I soon became accustomed to it.
On Wednesday, I had two students that stayed for about 45 minutes. This session went quickly and smoothly. The one returning student I have, brought her friend along with her because she thought that I was a good help.
It seems that more people are starting to use my office hours to improve their grade in the class and increase their knowledge of physics.

Week 4

This week I helped two students. The first had specific questions about concepts and previous quizzes, so we worked through that material and did some practice problems. The second also had a couple questions which I was able to help her with.

Friday, February 6, 2015

Week 3

Last week my office hour was after they had just had an exam, so I wasn't expecting a lot of traffic. One student came to do some homework, and it was more like one-on-one tutoring since he was the only one there. He wanted to work through the homework problems there and let me know if he had any questions/problems with them. I helped him through a few concepts such as how electric field work in a conducting and non-conducting surface, as well as how charge works in a conducting shell that contains a charge inside.

The student arrived at around 7pm and left at the end of my office hours at 9pm. He had not finished all his homework yet, but said he felt he could complete the rest on his own.

Week 4

This week I had a newcomer. My office hours were the three hours immediately before their exam so I was expecting a lot more last minute questions but it was nice to see at least one student coming in and asking for help. The student was clearly well studied for the exam and had a good grasp on all the concepts but just wanted me to help him work through a question on the practice exam. I let him start by working it out on the board and whenever he would get stumped or took a wrong direction I would chime in with a question that would help lead him down the right path. It was very neat to see his wheels turning and eventually connect the dots on how to tackle the problem.

Lonely Week

Students had their first exam on Monday, so I didn't have any students in my office hours. It gave me a nice chance to look ahead at the upcoming material, but I hope I have more students next week!

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Week 4

This week I helped 4 students.

This week my office hours were slightly more attended. I had one person on Tuesday, none on Wednesday, and three on Thursday. We went over the worksheets that I made, and it seemed to be very helpful.

One of the students came on both Tuesday and Thursday, and it was really cool to see his logical progression through the problems. It was amazing what a difference two hours could have. Also, this same student told me that one of the problems on their quiz was very similar to one we did in my office hours on Tuesday. He was very proud to say that he was one of the only ones in the class who knew how to do the problem on the quiz. I was surprised at how good this really felt to me. Knowing that I helped him achieve a better score on one of his quizzes based on a problem I randomly selected out of the book was a really cool feeling. This experience made this week the best one I've had by far.

I'm hoping that the upcoming weeks are as rewarding as this one was. I feel like I'm gaining some steam, and I'm looking forward to keeping it rolling.

Weeks 2 and 3

The past two weeks have went well.  I am seeing many of the same students come to my office hours.  Friday is typically my busiest session of office hours.  I am enjoying working with the students and their progress is evident.  With the first exam approaching, I look to hold a review session to help the students prepare.

Week 3

This was an interesting week because I had my session the night before the first Physics 2 exam. I had a whopping 22 students show up so I had to change the way I did things. Dr. Frolov posted practice questions for the exam and to supplement that I made 6 practice problems for them. I printed out ~25 copies of both Frolov's problems and my own to distribute to the class. Whenever the students came in, I asked them if they had gotten a chance to work on Frolov's practice problems. Because about half of them hadn't gotten a chance to try them, I waited 30 minutes from the start of my session to actually begin addressing the whole class. Based on their decision, I went through each of the practice problems in order. Because these were practice problems and it wasn't homework, I felt less reluctant to just go through the solution (though for tricky parts I asked the class to see what they would do).

Overall I think I was helpful. From what I heard, the free response problems on their exam were very similar to Frolov's practice problems so I think I did the right thing by making that the focus of my session. When I resume to normal office hours next week I think I might change things up.

3rd Week of Office Hours

This week of office hours has been uneventful.  I haven't seen anybody for the entire week.  Their test was over a week ago, so I was expecting more to start showing up again for help with the new topics they're covering, but maybe my office hours present a time conflict for many students.  I will see how next week goes.  They have another test coming up in a couple weeks, so they might start coming back.

Week 5

I was disappointed that only one person came to my office hours.
He asked me few questions about webassign questions and I asked him questions so that he is on the right track to solve the webassign questions.

Week 3

The only person I helped last week was a friend who has consistently been attending my office hours. I was a little disappointed at the turnout, especially since the first test was coming up. Hopefully people may have struggled this time around will seek more help and come to office hours.

Ryan Tan Week 3

Ryan Tan
Physics 0175
Dytman TH 1100-1245

A total of 10 different students have come to my office hours. Several times, they had no questions at all and I would review concepts. Today, I reviewed some old material in preparation for the exam that is coming next Thursday. Some had issues with the concept of charges on a metal sphere. I had to explain that a sphere with a charge of 0 does not mean that there are no charges on the sphere. I showed them how these charges can be separated and applied that concept to the concept of conductors. I expect more students in the coming days as a test is fast approaching.

Week 3

I had no one come to office hours this week, but I did help some students in the library by explaining some concepts. Overall, most of the students I talked to felt confident about the test.

Week 3

No one came to office hours this week despite having a test this upcoming week. A little disappointed but there is still a good chance people will come next week to clear some stuff up in my office hours immediately before the test.

Week 3

This week I had no one come on Tuesday due to a test just beforehand. On thursday I had one student come to ask questions on force diagrams. It was enjoyable to teach them how to handle force problems. So far this has been a great experience!

Weeks 1, 2, & 3

(Post by Daniel Sokolowski, 01/31/2015)
First off, I would like to apologize for not having posted sooner. From the last UTA meeting, I was under the impression that one of these reports was only needed at the end of every month, not every week. So, to catch up, I’m going to summarize weeks 1, 2, and 3 in this (lengthy) post.
For background, my weekly schedule is Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1:00-2:00 PM, located in room 127 (“The Irish Room”) on the first floor of the Cathedral of Learning.
In week 1 (01/13/2015-01/15/2015), nobody showed up. I became acquainted with the room, I observed the class structure, and set up Salon to watch videos to review and catch up to the class.
In week 2 (01/20/2015-01/22/2015), nobody showed up on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I received my first student, Vivian Feng. She came asking for assistance on homework problems. I provided assistance on dealing with relative motion problems, explaining the concept, how to set up a problem, so on and so forth. Since nobody else came that day, I provided further assistance with other problems. For the rest of the problems, she understood the concepts, it was a matter of just needing a fresh set of eyes to double-check her work (sign confusion, forgot to push a number on her calculator, etc.) while she redid the problems in front of me. I advised that she practice additional relative motion problems.
On Thursday, Vivian returned, this time asking for assistance with practice exam questions. One of them was a tricky motion problem, the kind that requires back-to-back equations to solve, based on qualitative information in the problem set-up. I explained this to her, and showed her how to solve it. (It was very unlikely that any explanation that I would have given would have helped her figure how to set up and solve the problem.) I explained how problems like these require creativity, and quite a bit of trial-and-error to figure out how to solve. The rest was more double-checking; she understood all the remaining concepts, but just wanted someone to check her work. I advised that she practice more system of equations motion problems for practice.
In week 3 (01/27/2015-01/29/2015), nobody showed up on Tuesday or Wednesday. (I just used the scheduled hours to work on a lengthy chemistry lab.) Vivian came by again on Thursday. She needed some help on homework problems. This time, though, there was a considerable number of concepts that she struggled with, such as differentiating between mass and weight, defining and re-defining systems of interacting objects, and then combining both halves of Newton’s second law (Fnet = m*a). I did my best to point out the areas where she was mistaken, and assist her in solving the remaining the problems. We were running out of time, so we went to the lecture together. Since she was my only student, and I was free for the rest of the day, I offered to stay with her after class and help her figure out the two remaining problems she had to do. She did them all correctly, after a little bit of extra guidance. Before she left, I reviewed all of her trouble areas with her. She then told me how she would show up next week, that I was “very helpful,” and that she “now underst[ood] the concepts a bit more.”

Week 3

This week, there was confusion about my room assignment so I did not have any students at my office hours. Dr. D'Urso has offered the students extra credit to attend the UTA office hours, so I expect to see more students next week. Also, they have an exam in 2 weeks so I think there will be more students with questions in preparation for that.
